How to Measure Your Closet for a Custom Closet System
Share
Getting good measurements is the most important step in ordering a custom closet system. At Closet Parts Pro in North Miami Beach, we cut every closet panel on our CNC to the size you give us, so a few careful minutes with a tape measure gives you a closet organizer that fits perfectly. This guide works for both walk-in closets and reach-in closets.
What you need to measure your closet
- A metal tape measure (25 ft is ideal)
- A pencil and paper, or your phone's notes app
- A level, if you have one
1. Measure the closet width (back wall)
Measure the back wall from side wall to side wall in three places: near the floor, in the middle, and near the ceiling. Walls are rarely perfectly straight. Write down all three numbers and use the smallest one. Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch. Our custom closets let you add a fraction, so you get an exact fit.
2. Measure the closet height
Measure from the floor to the ceiling at the left, middle and right of the back wall, and use the smallest number. If you have crown molding, measure to the bottom of the molding.
3. Check the closet depth
Measure from the back wall to the front of the door frame. For hanging clothes, a closet should be at least about 24 inches deep so hangers fit without rubbing the door. Our closet system panels come in 12", 14" or 16" depths. Shirts and jackets hang past the front edge of the panels, so a 14" panel works in most standard reach-in closets.
4. Note anything in the way
- Baseboards: measure their height and thickness and include them in your notes or photos, so we can plan the closet around them.
- Outlets, light switches and vents: measure from the floor and from the nearest side wall to the center of each.
- Doors and windows: note where the door swings and how wide the opening is, so drawers and shelves are not blocked.
- Sloped ceilings or soffits: measure the height where the slope starts and ends.
5. Take photos of your closet
Take a straight-on photo of each wall and one of the door opening. Photos help our closet designers catch anything the numbers miss.
